Longing for Spring…

I long for Spring.  I long for warm sunshine and a thermometer that proudly proclaims 72 degrees.  Granted, I’m not a fan of hot, humid Summers.  I would be happy if there were just two seasons – Spring and Fall!

Native Iowans sagely comment that “it’s been a mild Winter”.  Two snowstorms and a few other snows here and there were enough for me, thank you.  Evidently, it isn’t over.  This morning, it is cold and windy and the thermometer appears stuck at 10 degrees!  We’ve been warned that “a ‘blizzard’ is coming tomorrow about noon (they can now predict the time?!) and will last until the following day with heavy accumulation”!

So, yesterday I reconciled myself to the fact I’d better prepare just in case.  I headed out in yesterday’s 18 degrees accompanied by a brisk wind and the bright sunshine that fooled me into thinking that it was warmer.  I went first to the wonderful library about 3 miles away and stocked up on a stack of knitting books and the new book by Earlene Fowler.  I have 8 new skeins of wonderful yarn for my next project after I finish this one.

The large, wonderful West Des Moines library.  Designed in a Craftsman style…

Next, it was to Walgreen’s to refill a prescription and stock up on a few toiletries.  The last stop was the grocery store.  Milk in a glass bottle, bread, a whole roasted chicken, a dozen eggs, organic mixed lettuce and a few other things.  Last night was roast chicken with my meal…today I will make chicken salad with it.  I also baked the Ozark Mountain Apple Cake last night.  If I’m going to be “snowbound”, I may as well have dessert, huh?!

I hope wherever you are, you’re staying warm and enjoying these days before Spring eventually comes…

    Wow Dianne,
I didn’t realize it gets that cold in Iowa!!! Here in NY it is in the low 30’s, but we also have a strong cold wind. I don’t think we are expecting any snow, though. I, too, am ready for spring. Each year I feel the cold more and more and like it less and less. I’ll take spring, summer and fall, but my favorite is summer. I just like to be WARM.

Sounds like you are well prepared. I hope your storm is brief and not as bad as predicted. Stay warm and cozy, as will I.

    🙂

Oh Dear! Well, it looks like you are taking the lemons and making some lemonade! Perfect weather for staying inside with yarny crafts and some good food! I made your Ozark Apple Cake when you posted the recipe and it was delicious! Thanks for sharing that! We are expecting heavy rain and strong winds on Friday. Winter is not over, but guess what? We turn the clocks ahead in 19 days! At least we will have longer days and more light. Stay warm and safe, Dianne. xoxo

Longer days and more light sounds wonderful, Karen! I’ve actually given myself permission the next few days to curl up on the sofa with my new book when I’m not knitting or sewing! You stay warm and safe as well. Blessings!

I also made a trip to pickup the items to be ice bound. There are daffodils in bloom with bad weather coming. Mother Nature so badly wants to show her Spring beauty although it is in the 30’s. Hopefully, it will just be a minimal amount of ice. Love the Earlene Fowler books…she can certainly make you laugh. You reminded me I need to get back to reading again.

Oh, I remember all those ice storms in the South! Hopefully, it won’t be too bad or do too much damage. Glad you know who Earlene Fowler is! I love her books too. Stay safe and warm!

Brrrrrrr! That’s cold! I love the Craftsman style of the Library. Just beautiful. And, I’m sure I would enjoy those knitting books. 😉 blessings ~ tanna

We’ve had several days of bright sunshine which fooled me into thinking it was warm outside–until I stepped out the door. Like you, I wish the interim seasons of spring and fall were of longer duration.

I was thrilled to find such a large, very nice library. Each nearby community has one! I also checked out some DVD’s but, apparently, my DVD player is broken! Guess I’ll be shopping for a new one in a few days. 😉 I will be sure to show the patchwork blanket when I’m finished.

i remember the first time my grandma asked me to pick up some skeins of yarn for her. i was baffled–whoever heard of a skein? now i think it’s just the most awesome word. 🙂

Hope you’re holding up out there with the storm. It missed us and didn’t even leave the ice they said we’d get and that makes all of us happy. Rather have snow than ice. Supposed to get up in the 40’s for the next week, so that will be a nice reprieve. Sounds like you stocked up on all the necessities to weather a storm.

Hi, Cindy…thankfully, we only got 6″ of a powdery snow…beautiful but almost off the streets now! I’m glad! But I’ll still enjoy staying in working on some projects for now…

    Hi Dianne,
I’m glad the storm has gone by now, and it wasn’t too bad. That library looks wonderful. Libraries here in the UK are struggling, hit by government cuts. I do hope spring will come soon for you. I well remember our years in Central Illinois. Spring and fall used to seem to be about two weeks long each!
